Every return graded A, B or C by a multi-model AI system. Three photographs. Real-time results in your merchant portal. No manual guesswork, no inconsistency, no blind spots for fraud.
The problem
Most 3PLs rely on a member of staff eyeballing each return and making a judgement call. That creates three problems that get worse as your volume grows.
What one person calls Grade A, another calls Grade B. Standards drift across shifts and staff. You can't audit what you can't standardise.
Item-swapping — returning a different product than the one ordered — is the most common form of return fraud. It's easy to miss on a busy packing floor.
Manual inspection produces no structured record. You can't see patterns, dispute chargebacks with evidence, or refine your returns policy on real data.
A thorough manual inspection takes 5–10 minutes per item. At scale, that's a significant processing delay — slowing refunds and holding up resaleable stock.
The process
Risen AI runs a two-stage pipeline on every return. The full process happens at the warehouse and results appear in your portal the same day.
The parcel arrives at our Bedfordshire warehouse. It's logged against your booking reference and placed in the inspection queue.
Warehouse staff photograph the item from multiple angles. Images are captured and sent to the Risen AI pipeline automatically.
Risen AI compares the return against your original Shopify product images. Any mismatch is flagged immediately — the product doesn't even need to be opened.
If the identity check passes, Risen AI assesses physical condition and packaging state. A weighted ensemble of vision models reaches a consensus grade: A, B, or C.
Warehouse staff review the AI grade. They can override where needed — every override is logged, giving you a full audit trail.
Grade, photos, condition notes, and packaging assessment are visible in your merchant portal at portal.returnrev.com. Real-time. No waiting for an email report.
Grading system
Three grades. Unambiguous criteria. No grey areas that produce inconsistent stocking decisions.
The item is the correct product, in mint condition, with original or fully intact packaging. Immediately resellable as new.
The correct item, but with minor wear, small cosmetic marks, or damaged packaging only. The item itself is undamaged. Still resellable — as open-box or with repackaging.
Any mismatch between the returned item and the original order automatically results in Grade C — regardless of physical condition. Significant damage also triggers Grade C.
Risen AI
Risen AI isn't a single off-the-shelf vision model — it's a proprietary ensemble system built specifically for ecommerce returns inspection. Multiple AI models assess each return independently; their outputs are combined using a weighted consensus mechanism to produce a single, high-confidence grade.
Packaging is assessed separately from the item. Product identity is verified before condition is graded. The result is a structured, auditable record for every return — not a best guess.
Why it matters
In UK fashion and apparel, return rates commonly run at 30–40%. For brands selling from the US, EU, or Australia into the UK, every undetected fraudulent return or misgraded item is a direct margin hit with no audit trail to dispute it.
