Risen AI — Proprietary Vision Inspection

The only UK 3PL with AI vision inspection built in

Every return graded A, B or C by a multi-model AI system. Three photographs. Real-time results in your merchant portal. No manual guesswork, no inconsistency, no blind spots for fraud.

ReturnRev is currently the only UK returns warehouse and 3PL with AI vision inspection. Every other UK provider inspects manually.

Manual returns inspection breaks at scale

Most 3PLs rely on a member of staff eyeballing each return and making a judgement call. That creates three problems that get worse as your volume grows.

⚖️

Inconsistency

What one person calls Grade A, another calls Grade B. Standards drift across shifts and staff. You can't audit what you can't standardise.

🔍

Missed fraud

Item-swapping — returning a different product than the one ordered — is the most common form of return fraud. It's easy to miss on a busy packing floor.

📊

No data trail

Manual inspection produces no structured record. You can't see patterns, dispute chargebacks with evidence, or refine your returns policy on real data.

🐌

Speed bottleneck

A thorough manual inspection takes 5–10 minutes per item. At scale, that's a significant processing delay — slowing refunds and holding up resaleable stock.

From return received to grade in the portal

Risen AI runs a two-stage pipeline on every return. The full process happens at the warehouse and results appear in your portal the same day.

01

Return received

The parcel arrives at our Bedfordshire warehouse. It's logged against your booking reference and placed in the inspection queue.

02

Three photos taken

Warehouse staff photograph the item from multiple angles. Images are captured and sent to the Risen AI pipeline automatically.

03

Stage 1 — Identity check

Risen AI compares the return against your original Shopify product images. Any mismatch is flagged immediately — the product doesn't even need to be opened.

04

Stage 2 — Condition grade

If the identity check passes, Risen AI assesses physical condition and packaging state. A weighted ensemble of vision models reaches a consensus grade: A, B, or C.

05

Human review

Warehouse staff review the AI grade. They can override where needed — every override is logged, giving you a full audit trail.

06

Portal updated

Grade, photos, condition notes, and packaging assessment are visible in your merchant portal at portal.returnrev.com. Real-time. No waiting for an email report.

What A, B and C actually mean

Three grades. Unambiguous criteria. No grey areas that produce inconsistent stocking decisions.

A

Grade A — Mint / Correct

The item is the correct product, in mint condition, with original or fully intact packaging. Immediately resellable as new.

Returns straight to sellable inventory.
B

Grade B — Minor wear or packaging damage

The correct item, but with minor wear, small cosmetic marks, or damaged packaging only. The item itself is undamaged. Still resellable — as open-box or with repackaging.

Flagged for repackaging or discounted resale.
C

Grade C — Mismatch or significant damage

Any mismatch between the returned item and the original order automatically results in Grade C — regardless of physical condition. Significant damage also triggers Grade C.

Mismatch always = Grade C. No exceptions.

A multi-model ensemble built for one job

Risen AI isn't a single off-the-shelf vision model — it's a proprietary ensemble system built specifically for ecommerce returns inspection. Multiple AI models assess each return independently; their outputs are combined using a weighted consensus mechanism to produce a single, high-confidence grade.

Packaging is assessed separately from the item. Product identity is verified before condition is graded. The result is a structured, auditable record for every return — not a best guess.

Shopify-native identity check Compares each return against your live product images via Shopify.
🧠
Weighted consensus grading Multiple vision models vote on condition — reducing the error rate of any single model.
📦
Independent packaging assessment Packaging condition is graded separately from item condition — so a damaged box never inflates or deflates the item grade.
🛡️
Human override logging Every staff override is captured — building a dataset that continuously improves the model.

Returns are not a small problem

In UK fashion and apparel, return rates commonly run at 30–40%. For brands selling from the US, EU, or Australia into the UK, every undetected fraudulent return or misgraded item is a direct margin hit with no audit trail to dispute it.

About AI returns inspection

Is ReturnRev the only UK 3PL with AI inspection?
Yes. ReturnRev is currently the only UK third-party logistics provider with AI vision inspection built into its returns handling process. Other UK 3PLs inspect manually, which introduces inconsistency and fraud risk at scale.
Is AI inspection an add-on or included as standard?
It is included as standard. Every return processed through ReturnRev goes through the Risen AI pipeline at no extra charge. The base rate of £2.50 per return covers receipt, photography, AI+human grading, and portal update.
Can it really detect item-swapping fraud?
Yes. Stage 1 of the Risen AI pipeline compares the returned item against the original Shopify product images before any condition grading occurs. A mismatch — such as a different product, wrong colour, or wrong size — is flagged immediately as Grade C, regardless of the item's physical condition. This creates a clear, photographed audit trail.
What if the AI makes a mistake?
Warehouse staff review every AI grade and can override it. All overrides are logged, so you have full visibility into both the AI's decision and the human review. The override data also feeds back into improving the model over time.
Which ecommerce platforms does ReturnRev integrate with?
ReturnRev integrates with Shopify and supports Loop Returns, Narvar, and AfterShip webhooks. The merchant portal at portal.returnrev.com gives real-time visibility into all returns and grades. Prepaid UK return labels are also available via Evri.
Do you work with brands based outside the UK?
Yes — that is our primary focus. ReturnRev is built for brands selling into the UK from the US, EU, Nordics, Australia, and beyond who need a UK returns address, inspection, and fulfilment partner without setting up their own UK infrastructure.
